March 2006 Maori dance and Scottish Theatre
Manaia works with Visible Fictions Theatre Company Manaia’s work with students from Doon Academy entered its second phase with a 4 week residency for Manaia trainer Kylie Ngaropo. Produced by Glasgow based Visible Fictions Theatre Company and with backing from the National Theatre of Scotland and the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Power, the work involved incorporating work from a number of artists including well known playwright Linda McLean, and local musicians and set designers.
The result is the production “Flight” which explores ideas for leaving ones homeland, in this case Scotland, for the shores of Aotearoa. Maori haka, poi and dance were taught to the students of Doon Academy and incorporated into the production, where Aotearoa was represented as the land of destiny.
